One small gathering; one very large family.
“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matt 6:9-10
Spoiler-alert: we don’t entirely know what we’re doing. We’re still new at this — still figuring out structures and statements and what it means to establish a fellowship committed to one another and to the good news of King Jesus. And on this journey we know we’re not alone. Countless thousands have walked this path before us, and our gathering is just one small expression of the vibrant, living tapestry of Christ’s eternal kingdom — a very large family indeed! We don’t have any secret-sauce on doing church “right”, only as Paul says, passing on, “as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” (I Cor. 15:3+4).
The Apostle’s Creed likewise succinctly frames the foundation of our faith:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
*that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places
If our eyes remain on Christ — if He continues to be our first-importance, then while disagreements come and go, we will continue to find unity in what is ultimately most important. After all, this isn’t even our church — it’s His. We just get to tend faithfully the garden He planted and sustains for His glory. It’s His story and His Kingdom, not ours.
If that sounds like a journey you’d like to be a part of, we’d love to have you join us. Bring all your imperfection, questions, insecurities, and we’ll do the same. Together, we’ll see what the Spirit wants to grow in our midst.
